Cement guide
Cement types explained: ordinary Portland, white and Portland limestone cement
Ordinary Portland cement (OPC)
OPC is the general-purpose cement used for concrete, blocks, plaster and screed. If a drawing or contractor simply says "cement", this is usually what is meant. Check the specification of your project, because some structures require a particular type.
Portland limestone cement
Portland limestone cement replaces part of the clinker with ground limestone. It is widely used for general construction and masonry work in the region. Ask your engineer or consultant whether your project allows it.
White cement
White cement has a very high whiteness and is used where colour matters: decorative finishes, architectural elements, tile grout and terrazzo. It is usually priced higher than grey cement, so it is normally used only where the colour is needed.
Storing cement on site
- Keep bags dry and off the ground on pallets.
- Stack them away from walls and cover them from sun and rain.
- Use older stock first. Cement that has formed hard lumps should not be used for structural work.
